Abstract
[...] Venice is, of course, eternally beguiling and unique. But more than this, the city ia a near miracle: it's marble-clad palazzi are built atop nests of wooden piles and soft mud. It also has a dwindling, ageing populatoin and is notoriously resistant to change. When La Fenice opera house burnt down for the second time, in 1996, it was rebuilt to look exactly the same, which many see as indicative of an inherent provincialism. Yet the millennium brought a growing tide of modernism. [...] You might be put off by the crowds or simply think that you've seen it all before. Think again. Wander off the the beaten path and get lost in the labyrinth of quiet corners and squares, in Canareggio, Castello and Giudecca in particular, where the canal views are just as exquisite and the neighbourhood ambience is enchanting.
